Effective influencer marketing in 2024
How to reach out to influencers and actually get a response!

There’s a right way and a wrong way to reach out to influencers to ask for collaboration.
The same goes for other retailers if you’re selling a product.
This is an example of a DM or email most companies or brand managers would send to an influencer
(TLDR; script below, be more personable by being interested in them)
(What NOT to do):
Headline: Exciting Collaboration Opportunity with (Your Brand Name)
Hi (Influencer’s Name)
My name is (Name), and I am the (Position) at (Brand Name). We are huge fans of your work and believe that your content aligns perfectly with our brand values and vision.
We are reaching out to explore the possibility of collaborating with you on an exciting project. We believe that your unique style and engaging content would be a fantastic fit for our upcoming campaign, and we would love to discuss how we can work together to create something truly special.
Here are a few details about the collaboration:
Campaign Objective: [Briefly describe the goal of the campaign]
Collaboration Type: [e.g., Sponsored posts, product reviews, giveaways, etc.]
Key Deliverables: [List the expected deliverables from the influencer]
Timeline: [Provide the timeline for the collaboration]
Compensation: [Mention the compensation or benefits offered]
We are confident that this collaboration will be mutually beneficial and look forward to the opportunity to work with you. Please let us know if you are interested, and we can schedule a call to discuss the details further.
Thank you for considering this opportunity. We are excited about the possibility of partnering with you and creating amazing content together!

Why is this wrong?:
This is the incorrect way to go about it because it is self-centered. While it is a harsh truth, it is a truth; no one cares about you or your brand, they only care about the problem you can solve and what you can do for them.
“We are reaching out to explore the possibility of collaborating with you on an exciting project”
You think it’s exciting, not them. So how can you make them excited?
No specific examples
In another example from the above script, the wording mentions that they are huge fans, but without offering an example. How do they know you actually mean it? And has the content impacted or inspired you in any way?
Too lengthy
Keep it short and simple. The above is lengthy and you’re throwing everything at them at once before you even know if they’re even remotely interested.
A more proper way to go about it…
Headline: Any chance you would be interested in a collaboration?
Hey, (name)
I'm _________ The brand manager for _____________
We really liked your post on (specific post example that is most closely related to your brand campaign).
Since you have mastered how to connect with your audience we would like to offer you an opportunity to consider.
I'm/we're currently working on a campaign for (product/service), and we would like to show you first to see if you're even interested before moving forward.
We want to make sure that it's something that you would personally buy before suggesting it to your audience. (Even though we'll send you/let you try it for free if there's initial interest)
If you do decide you like it, and feel it's a fit for your audience, we would be more than happy to discuss compensation with you.

Why this works:
Notice the more casual tone overall between the first message and the second. Don’t forget, it’s another human on the other end of the screen. You can still be professional while being conversational. Not everything has to be so polished, especially in a DM.
Headline:
Putting “you” in the headline automatically grabs attention. It also asks a question, which generally provokes a response instead of the first example which just makes the statement “Exciting Collaboration Opportunity with (Your Brand Name)” in the headline.
Specific content:
Bringing up a specific piece of content shows that you’ve actually viewed their content. Most people will reach out either through an influencer network or directly without really knowing what the influencer is all about or if their audience is engaged, or the right audience for their business.
Putting the ball in their court
Most influencers, especially ones with larger followings do this as a job full-time and usually have plenty of brands willing to give them a check at whatever number they say.
If you’re not working with that type of budget, you have less leverage and need to be more creative. And even if you are, getting their initial interest before moving forward just makes more sense for everyone involved.
Having the influencer view the product before they review
Some companies will just get the addresses or P.O. Boxes of influencers through a network and just mass send out products or invite emails if they’re selling a service.
This can work for big brands that are well known and spend tens of thousands on marketing and R&D and they’re confident in your product.
But most businesses are not at that point, and they need to be more agile while still having access to people of influence that their brand aligns with.
Working effectively with well known content producers can help elevate your company to a level you’ve never imagined.
It just needs to be managed properly to foster long-term relationships that are more profitable and productive for everyone involved.
Getting in touch with influencers or getting your product into stores can be an unclear and time-consuming process. Between finding the correct contact info, following up, building and maintaining a relationship, and knowing how large brands evaluate products. There’s a lot to be managed, not including the other aspects of your business.
